“I have never experienced romantic love,” Adam Low says unapologetically.
You’re not supposed to feel sorry for him, he’s only 14. And when he lists the things he does love – everything from snow fights to his mum’s ‘macoroni’ – you are instantly transported back to the days when your biggest decisions also revolved around what colour Doc Martens to buy.
Junction 25 is a group of 21 teenagers from Glasgow whose 2009 show about the heart has been updated to reflect their changed attitudes, but still remains as honest and energetic as ever.
The company borrows from Justin Timberlake, Titanic, Love Actually and Four Weddings And A Funeral – which came out before most of them were born.
They look into everything from sibling love – and vicious fighting – to the death of a loved person. The result is not always perfect, but they have decades ahead of them to hone their considerable skills.
The highlight was a scene that saw the ensemble jumping for joy, throwing themselves onto the floor and cautiously picking themselves up again.
Most have yet to learn that getting over heartbreak doesn’t feel quite that easy at the time – but what a beautiful way of putting our emotional rollercoasters into perspective.
To say this was my fringe highlight would be a huge understatement.
