A modern-idiom, somewhat restrained style of classical Indian dance characterises the
closely textured choreography of Javachandra Kumar in Dance Ihayami’s version of the
Everyman odyssey.
Amid Kevin Williams’ richly-hued palette of strong movement and measured gesture, ever-changing colours and screen visuals, and Milton Reame-James and Jeffs Ellis’ eclectic East-West collage of music and sound, Kumar as the central male dancer robustly interweaves with seven female dancers representing the colours of the rainbow. Their sequences expressing the Seven Deadly Sins finely frame Everyman’s journey to his destiny, as colours and sounds pleasingly interact to a New Age audiotrack.
The visual effects created by this multimedia dance work are both appealing and generally satisfying, though would be even more so if the piece were somewhat longer and the movement more subtle.
