Is this the best value show at the fringe? OK it’s free, so even a shockingly bad show would be decent value. However most would be prepared to pay good money to see such top-notch musical comedy – As demonstrated by the money pouring into the collection bucket at the end of the show.
Sarah-Louise Young perfectly embodies all four cabaret stars – Bernie “a diva of a certain age” with a striking Bette Midler-style voice, sparkly pink jumpsuit-clad performance artist Kasia from Eastern Europe, “where the builders come from”, Aussie Sister Mary-Ann “the lady who puts a spiritual spring in your secular step.” And finally the star of last year’s acclaimed sell-out show Cabaret Whore, Edith Piaf’s suicidal former best buddy La Poule Plombée.
The accents are spot on, the singing is faultless and the brilliantly observed one-liners had the audience (standing room only) unashamedly chuckling throughout.
Cabaret Whore - Encore!, one of the fringe’s finest musical comedies, deserves to be in one of the fringe’s finest comedy venues, although Bernie’s “beautiful little cheapskates” were very glad to empty their pockets here instead.
